Gus Wendel is the Assistant Director of cityLAB at UCLA. Gus is interested in the ways that visual culture informs planning and design, the politics of place and space, urban humanities, and the effect of urban interventions on marginalized communities. These interests led him to write his master’s thesis on issues of safety among transgender women of color in Los Angeles’ everyday public spaces. He previously served as the legislative assistant to the Oregon Secretary of State and advocated for LGBTQ rights in the state of Oregon. Gus has a Master in Urban and Regional Planning from the Luskin School of Public Affairs and a BA in International Relations and Italian Studies from Brown University.
